The 5th of July Beach Cleanup: A community tradition

Join your friends and neighbors for our annual 5th of July Beach Cleanup! Volunteers will gather at 8 am Wednesday, July 5, to restore beauty to the AIP beach by picking up the “remains” of the 4th of July celebration. The cleanup goes quickly and really is a feel-good, fun event for all. Invite your neighbors, families (yes, children and grandchildren), and house guests to join in. Looking for artifacts of AIP history

The 50th Anniversary Task Force is gathering memorabilia from the early years of Amelia Island Plantation and needs your help. This includes pictures, newspaper or magazine articles, bulletins, maps, posters, etc. If you are willing to loan or donate items to the Task Force, please bring them to the AIPCA office at 5542 First Coast Highway, Suite 300, by Friday, June 30. The office is open from 9 am to 5 pm (closed for lunch 12-1 pm) Monday through Friday. Meet the founder of Amelia Island Sea Turtle Watch (AISTW) at our next Thoughtful Thursday at 5 pm June 22 at The Oaks. Mary Duffy will discuss the nesting and hatching process, the threats faced by nesting sea turtles and their hatchlings, and the work done by AISTW to support and monitor sea turtle nesting on the island. Amelia Island Plantation is in USDA Hardiness Zone 9A All plants need nutrients to grow. Plants usually get nutrients from the soil, but sometimes supplemental nutrients help them thrive. Proper fertilization enhances growth, increases flowering or fruiting, corrects nutritional deficiencies, and enhances the plant’s appearance. Improper fertilization can cause damage to plants and the environment. Fertilize according to UF/IFAS recommended rates and application timings to prevent nutrient runoff and leaching which can pollute Florida’s waters. Always follow the fertilizer label directions. A tournament like no other …

The second annual Drummond Point Park Boules Club Spring Petanque Tournament featured 24 community members playing in teams of two, including two teams from Osprey Village. The players enjoyed lunch in the park before starting play. Over the course of the afternoon, the field was narrowed down to the Final Four teams — Jeff & Robin Pullen; Lib Schuler and Bill Quam; Mary & Stan Neal; and Jackye Rubin and Walton Rogers. Congratulations to the tournament winners — Lib and Bill — who won a hard-fought match against runners-up Jackye and Walton.
