Weeds are opportunists. Give them an inch and they will take a yard! (Pun intended.) They seem to be everywhere and the seeds are always left in the soil for the next season, especially with the abundance of rain and the warm/hot, muggy weather we have been having. A weed is a plant that’s out of place. They compete with desirable plants for nutrients, water, light, and space. They usually are not attractive and are summer or winter season plants. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) reminds the public that as we enjoy our beaches this weekend and beyond, everyone can do their part to help sea turtles and shorebirds have a successful nesting season by giving them space, removing beach furniture and trash before leaving for the day, keeping beaches clean and dark, and never disturbing their nests. The 5th of July Beach Cleanup: A community tradition

Volunteers will gather at 8 am Wednesday, July 5, to restore beauty to the AIP beach by picking up the “remains” of the 4th of July celebration. The 50th Anniversary Task Force is gathering memorabilia from the early years of Amelia Island Plantation and needs your help. This includes pictures, newspaper or magazine articles, bulletins, maps, posters, etc. If you are willing to loan or donate items to the Task Force, please bring them to the AIPCA office at 5542 First Coast Highway, Suite 300, by Friday, June 30.
