A Pictorial History of AIP 1970-2024

The AIP 50th Anniversary Task Force in 2024 created a traveling history exhibit, “The Last 50 Years: A Photo Journal,” to mark the occasion. Historic photos, documents, and newspaper clippings are combined with narrative text to chronicle the progress and setbacks this influential community has experienced over the last five decades.

Divided into decades, the exhibit guides viewers through AIP’s rich history, starting with the purchase by environmentally-conscious developer Charles Fraser in 1970 of 3,700 acres on the south end of Amelia Island that had been eyed as the site as a titanium strip mine. Other highlights include the heyday of the women’s professional tennis tournament which spurred tourism to the island, two developer bankruptcies, and today’s thriving community that includes the Omni Amelia Island Resort, the Amelia Island Club, and Osprey Village senior living community.

Some of the boards are now displayed on the second floor of The Oaks Community Center.
