As we tumble headlong into an artificial intelligence (AI) future, our Thoughtful Thursday on October 24 will provide a chance to explore the key ethical considerations in AI, emphasizing the need to integrate ethical principles into its development and use. The discussion will underscore the importance of ongoing dialogue, collaboration, and public awareness in shaping AI that is fair, transparent, and respectful of privacy, calling on industry, policymakers, and society to actively contribute to ethical AI practices.
Our presenter will be Dr. Joshua Gellers, a professor in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at the University of North Florida and an expert with the Global AI Ethics Institute. He also is a member of the IEEE working group on design-centered human-robot interaction and governance.
He will discuss the importance of transparency and accountability, focusing on the need for clear, explainable AI systems and responsibility for AI-generated outcomes. Privacy concerns, including data collection and the risks of personal information misuse, will be highlighted, alongside the challenge of ensuring fairness by addressing biases in AI algorithms. The talk will also cover the impact of AI on employment and the importance of addressing economic disparities through measures like upskilling. Practical examples, such as facial recognition technology, will be used to illustrate how these ethical principles apply in real-world scenarios.
Event check-in at The Oaks, 203 Sea Marsh, will begin at 4:30 pm with wine and beer available for purchase (cash/credit) in the Clapper Rail. The presentation will start promptly at 5 pm in the Sunset Room.
